Through the Dead City - (Save & Load)
The main feature for the next update (0_0_0_5) will be the ability to save and load your progress. It’s something that people have been asking about for a while but I kept putting it off because I know there will still be a lot of changes in the future. Saves for previous versions might not always work with later versions.
To try and deal with that a bit, The player’s character and squad are saved in a separate file from the world data. That way, when new building types are added, the player can simply delete the old world and generate a new one while keeping their characters and items. I can’t promise this will always work though, as I will inevitably make changes to the survivors at some point too.
You can follow and download Through the Dead City on IndieDB..

Through the Dead City - (Alpha 0_0_0_4 Preview)

I’m planning to release the next alpha on Sunday. There’ll be more info and a full list of changes then, but here’s a quick preview of some of the main changes:

  • The player now starts in a safe house in the middle of the map. There’s a fence around the safe house that keeps the zombies out.
  • Shared slots in the inventory. These slots are used to share items between all survivors in your team. They’re extremely useful for ammo so you don’t have to constantly manage your ammo between all the survivors.
  • The ability to sleep in beds. Sleeping lets you skip a few hours ahead.
  • I also plan to add a couple new weapons before Sunday. That’s what I’ll be working on tonight and tomorrow.

You can follow Through the Dead City and download the Alpha on IndieDB.

Through the Dead City - (Interaction Range & Object Highlights)

The latest feature I’ve added is highlights on interactive objects(doors,windows,containers,etc.). With that, I’ve also finally changed the range of interaction to be within a few feet of each squad member. Objects within range have a green highlight and objects out of range have a red highlight when hovered over with the mouse.

This is just the first of a few new things I have planned for Alpha 0_0_0_4, but I’ll be busy this weekend since I’ve decided to take part in Ludum Dare 26.

You can download and follow Through the Dead City on Indie DB.

Q:how can I save progress

Anonymous

The ability to save hasn’t been implemented yet. I want to get all the main features in before I decide how saving should work.

Through the Dead City - (Alpha Release!)
It’s finally here! I’ve posted the first alpha build to IndieDB and it has been Authorized. If you want to give it a shot, here’s the download page.
I’ve also posted a news update on IndieDB explaining everything but that might take a little while before it goes through. If you have any trouble figuring things out, you can send me a message/ask on tumblr and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
If you do try it out, you can let me know what you think by filling out this quick little feedback form.
Thanks to anyone who does!

Through the Dead City - (quick update)
Another quick update. I’ve added fences and bushes to areas between buildings so they look a little less empty. I’ve also added cubicles for the offices.
This will probably be my last small update before the alpha release. There might be a couple more things I add (maybe a surprise, we’ll see if it works out) but I’ll just mention them in the big alpha update. Other than that, I want to take a day or two to do some bug fixing and polishing whatever really stands out if I have time.

Through the Dead City - (quick office prop update)
I spent part of the day working on adding a few new office props. There’s bathroom stalls, sinks, and water coolers. I still need to add some desks or something to make them actually look more like office buildings.

Through the Dead City - (quick props update)
Worked on adding a couple new props today. There’s a refrigerator, table, and a TV. I plan to add some more props for the office buildings too before the alpha release this weekend.
Over the last couple days I’ve also worked on the audio a lot. There’s now directional sound and they trail off with distance.
There’ll probably be another couple quick updates like this during the week since I’m busting my ass to get as much done as I can before the alpha release.
